Devon retail model scheme details

According to a press release issued by Devon County Council, the programme that is in place in that area is a success.
Here is the press release….

A new scheme that helps people obtain equipment to enable them to live independently has been a roaring success.

The scheme enables people who need simple aids for their home, such as walking frames, shower chairs, bed raisers and raised toilet seats, to collect them from a local shop with the option to ‘top up' by choosing a better item or a different colour for a small extra charge. Customers can also choose to have the equipment delivered or to have a family member or friend collect it.

Under the previous scheme, people were offered a generic service from a central community equipment store, with no choice regarding the equipment they received or where they could get it from. Fifty six retailers located across Devon and into the neighbouring local authorities have joined the scheme since November last year.

Initial customer feedback has been very positive. Simple survey cards distributed with prescriptions have recorded that over 80 per cent of customers are very happy with the choice and control they have under the new scheme. The same number are very happy with the accredited shops and with the ease at which they can collect equipment.

One such retailer is Roberts Hardware Shop in Ottery St Mary. Ros Brown said: "We pride ourselves on our service to the community, and although it is unusual for a Hardware shop to become an equipment retailer, it seemed a natural extension to our range. The national retail equipment tariff means that the margins are slim, however, our turnover has increased with minimal additional costs. Top ups are rare, but may increase as the new system settles in and we increase our knowledge and range of products stocked. Times are hard for retailers, so anything that provides a steady turnover, increased footfall and the opportunity for additional sales is always welcome."

The retail model range of community equipment is constantly being developed and extended to meet both user and carer needs

Councillor Stuart Barker, Devon County Council's Cabinet Member with the responsibility for Social Care said: "This equipment is essential to ensure people can continue to live independently in their own homes. We are delighted this programme is proving to be such a success for both the customer as well as the retailer, who have been very positive about the new scheme.”

Since the scheme started last November, over 60 per cent of simple equipment is being ordered with the new scheme, with a target of 75 per cent by December 2011.
