Free dementia booklet launched by FAST

A new free booklet has just been launched to help friends and family understand how equipment and technology can support the independence and safety of people with the early symptoms of dementia.

Getting Equipped to Tackle Forgetfulness provides clear information and some essential top tips for people who know someone experiencing confusion and memory problems.

The guide describes:

  • Some of the benefits of using equipment
  • What equipment is available to help
  • How to make decisions together about equipment
  • How and where to get hold of equipment

It was produced by three non-profit organisations – the Foundation for Assistive Technology (FAST), Innovations in Dementia and Trent Dementia Services Development Centre (Trent DSDC).

Sam Collin of FAST commented, "People can be reluctant to use technology to help care for their loved ones. We hope the guide will spread awareness of how equipment can, in the right circumstances, help people to live more independently and enjoy better quality of life, as well as provide reassurance for family and friends.”

Nada Savitch of Innovations in Dementia said, "The guide reflects the real experiences, views and voices of people with dementia, their family and friends, who were involved in its development. Their insights helped us to ensure that the booklet is honest, practical and easy to understand.”

The guide outlines how technology can help with everyday activities such as finding things, keeping safe, raising the alarm, staying in touch and taking medication.

Deborah Brooks of Trent DSDC, added, "Equipment can be high or low tech. Different things work for different people. Our guide provides a clear path for people to find, choose and use equipment that's right for them.”
