Person-centred Handling and Assessment in Challenging Situations

1 Day Training Course  Liverpool Independent Living Centre  Wednesday16th July 2008

PHACS is the first Moving and Handling assessment tool that adopts a ‘Human Rights Based Approach'. It follows the ‘FREDA' Principles of Fairness, Respect, Equality, Dignity and Autonomy. (Department of Health 2007).

This tool considers the carer, but also enables the person to be handled (or their advocate) to have their views and wishes included in the assessment, as part of a balanced decision making process.

PHACS has been designed for people who are often considered to display ‘challenging behaviour', or people who become unpredictable in handling situations. This model is particularly suited to people with learning disabilities, mental health distress, dementia, acquired brain injury and those with communications difficulties.

PHACS adopts a Person-Centred Approach to Moving and Handling. It considers the physical, psychological, sociological, cultural and health and safety factors in the Moving and Handling assessment. The PHACS Decision Support Tool assists the practitioner in prioritising decisions when considering possible safer handling solutions.

The PHACS model is based on the Moving and Handling of people, combining traditional and new approaches in its application. It promotes the use of change management strategies and creative problem solving in order to reduce the risk to the person and their carer.

Cost £125 for early bird bookings before 30th April, £150 from May onwards
