Lord Heseltine supports Counsel and Care

Lord Heseltine
Counsel and Care, the national charity working with older people, their families and carers to get the best care and support, has announced that its 2009 Graham Lecture will be given by the Rt Hon the Lord Heseltine on Thursday 10 September 2009, in central London. The charity is also holding a debate on the portrayal of older people in the media and presenting awards for media coverage of ageing and older people on the same day. The events form part of the third Eldercare Week from 7-13 September 2009.

Chaired by broadcaster Sheena McDonald, the debate is entitled Older People and the Media, and guest speakers will be Evelyn Pellow, Director of Enabling Concepts, and Lynn Strother, Director of the Greater London Forum of Older People. Both Evelyn and Lynn are part of Counsel and Care's VotingAge: an older people's manifesto Leadership Group. Giving a response on the panel will be David Brindle, The Guardian's Public Services Editor.

In delivering this year's Graham Lecture, Lord Heseltine, founder of Haymarket Media Group and former Deputy Prime Minister, will reflect on his experiences with the media as a practitioner, a politician, and more recently as someone entering later life.

ElderCare Week

ElderCare Week is organised by Counsel and Care. This national awareness week aims to highlight the care issues facing older people, and how they and their families and carers can get the best advice and plan ahead.

ElderCare Week will include the publication of a new policy paper on the future of homecare for older people by Counsel and Care in association with Ceretas, the professional association dedicated to individuals working in home care.

The week will also highlight Counsel and Care's advice and information service for older people, their families and carers.

Stephen Burke, Chief Executive of Counsel and Care, said: “We are delighted to welcome Lord Heseltine to give this year's Graham Lecture during our third ElderCare Week. “Lord Heseltine can give a unique commentary on the portrayal of older people in the media and we look forward to hearing his thoughts on a subject that is becoming more and more evident with the ageing population. As the government embarks on a reform of the care system with the social care funding Green Paper, it is a golden opportunity to discuss how the issues facing older people are covered by the media, and how older people themselves wish to be seen - not just as recipients of care, but as citizens with well rounded lives.”
