MEM-X joins NRS telecare range

NRS Mem-x
A vocal memory aid from Nottingham Rehab Supplies is attracting considerable interest - thanks to a personalised message alert feature that aids people with dementia.

The groundbreaking MEM-X Memory Aid Pendant, one of 155 new products showcased in the new NRS catalogue, has been developed to assist, support and reassure people in the early stages.

The compact ultra-light audio reminder can be programmed to suit an individual's requirements, and allows them to remain as independent as possible, for as long as possible. The device also reassures family members and carers that important messages are being relayed.

The MEM-X Memory Aid Pendant is already being talked about as the most user-friendly device on the market to assist carers and professionals in managing declining memory for a client or loved one. It is also part of the new and exclusive NRS Dementia Care Management Evaluation Kit.

NRS Brand Director Sandra King said: “We're delighted to add the MEM-X to our extensive range of Stand-Alone Telecare equipment because it's an uncomplicated item that is very effective. It was exhibited at the recent Dementia Care Congress, and the simple way to describe it is to say it's a dictaphone with a clock inside, and while not totally unique, what gives it the ‘edge' over others is that the recorded memory alerts are from a recognised voice, be it a carer or a family member. It is also easily portable, there are no indoor boundaries. Voice recognition is an extremely important aspect of the daily care of people with dementia and having that personal touch, rather than relying on a computer generated voice, is a feature that sets the MEM-X apart.”

The brain-child of a French surgeon whose mother had dementia, the MEM-X is now used as a second memory tool, or as part of a fall prevention package, instead of sticky notes or diary aids.

A simple programming system, via a covered keypad, allows carers or family members to record up to 90 personal messages, each lasting for 10 seconds. The reassuring reminders are then played at the exact time and date stipulated, simply by an alert tone prompting users to press an oversized blue button to hear the message.

The familiar pre-recorded messages - set on a daily, weekly or one-off basis - could be gentle nudges about anything, from locking the door, to special events and taking medication.

Approved by the Swedish Institute of Assistive Technology and recognised in Geneva's International Invention Contest, it has also been suggested that MEM-X can assist until stage five of seven in the characterised advances of Alzheimer's Disease.
