New training and briefing materials suite launched

FAST
The Foundation for Assistive Technology (FAST) has launched a suite of training and briefing materials to enable people to stay active and independent as they get older, through choosing and using equipment.

Changes to the way the state provides care services mean that increasing numbers of older people will be asked to make complex decisions about care options, including the purchase of equipment. And even though the choice of gadgets and aids to help with everyday living is growing, few people know what is available, or how and where they can get it.

FAST's toolkit, ‘Getting Equipped for Active Aging' is designed to fill this gap in awareness

These learning materials provide free, independent information and advice on:

  • How equipment can help us to stay active, healthy and independent
  • What equipment is available - from simple gadgets to sophisticated technology
  • How to get it from NHS and social services
  • Where to buy it and the questions to ask

Keren Down, Director of FAST commented, "Equipment has the potential to help all of us to keep doing the things we want to do as we get older. But the route to finding suitable equipment involves navigating a maze of information, service providers and retailers. Our new resource will help people to feel confident to find equipment that suits them and to feel in control of the decision making process.”

Early findings from a recent Office of Fair Trading investigation revealed that a significant proportion of consumers do not shop around when buying mobility aids, and are at risk of being overcharged by doorstep sales people. "We want to address this”, said Sam Collin, Senior project Manager at FAST, "We want to reach older people with clear and straightforward guidance that can empower them to find equipment that's useful and appropriate. We'll be working with voluntary and community groups to share the materials with people who may not have access to the internet.”

The Getting Equipped for ActiveAging resources are free to download from and can be used to run informal awareness raising sessions with older people, or staff and volunteers who work with older people.
