Clearwell Cup proves a walk away success

Held at Longhill Sports Centre in Ovingdean, nine teams came together to battle it out for the inaugural Clearwell Walking Football Cup; a first of its kind hosted in Sussex.

Organised by members of the Brighton and Hove Walking Football Club on Saturday 1st July, teams travelled from as far as Wrexham, Canterbury and Cheshunt to compete. Teams were split into three groups of three teams, with each team playing the other two teams in their group twice.

Following a number of closely contested matches across the day, Brighton and Hove Dolphins, Worthing Strikers and Brighton and Hove Penguins emerged victorious in their respective groups. Each team was awarded a trophy to mark the occasion and welcomed back to the next event to defend their titles.

Jobe Berrington, Head Coach of Brighton and Hove Walking Football Club, said: "We were very pleased with how it went off and we have had a lot of positive feedback from other teams and players - and one of the referees! There is every chance that we shall be making it an annual event.”

Walking Football’s popularity has been on a sharp rise in recent years, with people becoming more aware and involved in the sport. The Brighton and Hove club alone boasts a regular membership of over 35, allowing them to frequently field up 3 full teams at competitions, with players of 80 years old even playing and staying active.

Duncan Gillett, Managing Director of Clearwell Mobility, commented: "It’s great to see the work that Jobe and the rest of the team have been putting in coming to fruition. The size of the membership of the Brighton and Hove club alone shows how popular the sport has become and events such as this are great for spreading the word even further.”

The club is always looking for new members and meet regularly in Preston Park, Brighton on Sunday mornings for training and then again at the Moulsecoomb Community Leisure Centre on Friday afternoons.
