wheelAIR takes on the Dragons

Corien Staels, entrepreneur, CEO of Staels Design and inventor of the wheelAIR, is to appear on what promises to be a dramatic episode of the BBC's popular Dragon's Den airing Sunday 14th January on BBC 2.

"I'm sorry I am going to pass out" is probably not the phrase someone wants to utter in one of the most stressful business meetings they can have, however, for Corien Staels, it became a reality whilst shooting the episode in June 2017.

The wheelAIR, a cooling backrest cushion designed by Corien during her masters at Glasgow University, was designed when to alleviate the problems of overheating faced by wheelchair users. In 2016, she founded Staels Design and released her cooling innovation to the market in 2017.

Since coming up with her innovative cushion, activity has heated up for the cooling cushion, winning a number of innovation competitions and funding, including £100k in Scottish Edge in June 2017 and £31k in the Converge Challenge in October of the same year.

Corien, along with her brand ambassador, double Paralympian wheelchair rugby player and former captain, Michael Kerr, filmed the Dragon's Den episode in June 2017, a television series where business leaders pitch their business to investors known as 'dragons' in the hope of securing investment for a stake in the business.

The episode is sure to keep people on the edge of their seats if the episode's preview is anything to go by - preview below!

In an email released from the company, Corien commented that the experience one of the most stressful to date and that she forgot to eat breakfast before filming, leading to an unexpected turn on the set.

She wrote: 'Will I regret this? Maybe! But I might as well see the fun it, right?

'Looking forward to hearing what you think!!'
